Assisting in the rehabilitation of sewage treatment

The sewage treatment plant of Panajachel suffered severe damage during the storm. Fortunately, the main part of the treatment plant is untouched. These are the primary treatment structures and the up-flow anaerobic bio-digesters. The post-treatment components were lost, such as the percolating filters and final sedimentation tanks. The laboratory of water quality and the data records of the operation of the plant were lost together with the design blue-prints. There were also losses in segments of the sewage pipeline network, including the connection, across the river, to the treatment plant, necessary to clean sixty percent of the waste-water produced by Panajachel.

Before Hurricane Stan

After the storm

All of Panajachel sewage is now spilling untreated into the lake...

We implemented an assessment of the damages and gave written recommendations to the Mayors office and the towns Municipal Development Council (COMUDE). Pro-Lagos proposal and offer of assistance has been accepted, and we have contracted an engineer to design a priority sewage pipe across the river

We appreciate your support for the challenge of stopping sewage pollution of the town and lake; these for the sake of peoples health and economy.
